Empowering Survivors To Find Joy in the Journey!
What would you do if you heard the words, “You have cancer”?
The reality is that nearly four in ten people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. That means cancer touches every family, every community, and almost everyone we know.
Making Chemo Bearable (MCB) exists to provide awareness, education, support, and hope to individuals navigating their cancer journey. While much of the world focuses on finding a cure, we focus on the question patients ask every day during treatment: “What do I do in the meantime?”
The mission of MCB is deeply personal to our Founder and Executive Director, Ragina Ireland. Born from her own journey of resilience and triumph, her experience with cancer shifted her perspective and became the heartbeat behind Making Chemo Bearable. What began as a personal calling has grown into a movement centered on compassion, dignity, and joy.
Today, we are honored to serve hundreds of survivors across the United States. Our tagline, Empowering Survivors To Find Joy in the Journey, reflects our belief that even in the hardest seasons, moments of comfort and hope matter.
We bring that mission to life through our signature chemo boxes, thoughtfully filled with practical and comforting items, including our beloved bear that shares simple tips for coping with the side effects of chemotherapy. Beyond the boxes, we host survivor events, educational seminars, and meaningful moments of connection—reminders that no one has to walk this journey alone.
Hope doesn’t have to be loud. Every act of care matters. While we may not be able to change a diagnosis, we can change how someone feels along the way.
That is the heart of Making Chemo Bearable.
From Diagnosis to Destiny: Ragina’s Story
Ragina once thrived in the fast-paced world of corporate America, managing high-level relationships and traveling extensively as a seasoned professional. Her life was full filled with her faith, work, friendships, and frequent
adventures planned with her hard-earned airline miles. But everything changed when a breast cancer diagnosis altered the course of her life forever.
A 16-year breast cancer survivor, Ragina’s journey has been marked by resilience, faith, and purpose. Even before her cancer battle, she had already endured a serious health challenge—including endocarditis which led to strokes, meningitis, and sepsis. But nothing could prepare her for the physical and emotional toll of breast cancer.
Her diagnosis came just months after a clear mammogram, discovered during a self-exam while on a trip with lifelong friends. With the unwavering support of her sister Johnnie, a nurse practitioner, Ragina faced the news head-on and began the fight of her life.
Through countless surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy, and the painful loss of her hair and part of her femininity, Ragina discovered a deeper calling: to help others walk through the same storm. What began in pain transformed into purpose. She founded Making Chemo Bearable (MCB), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting cancer patients through education, care packages, healing spaces, advocacy, and policy work. Empowering Survivors to Find Joy in the Journey.
Survival is just the beginning—keep showing up and keep believing. Your strength will take you farther than fear ever will
Ragina’s life is a testament to strength, faith, and transformation. Her scars tell a powerful story—one she uses to uplift others and remind them that while the journey is hard, a moment is just that—a moment. Rest if you must but, never lose your rhythm.
